Thousands of people have lost their homes to flooding in Minot, North Dakota, as the Souris River has spilled over dikes and levees. Photographs show the widespread devastation caused by this natural disaster, but we can only at this time imagine the extent of the losses inside the homes. Our hearts go out to those whose homes are now submerged under water.

And so we pray this news.

Earth-Maker, Pain-Bearer, and Life-Giver,
our prayers go out to the thousands
of people in Minot, North Dakota,
who are homeless and helpless
in the face of flooding which
has taken away their refuge
and all their possessions
and precious memorabilia.

We need to remember that
it takes many hands to build
a house but only a few zealous
hearts to create a new home.

May those who have lost their homes
fondly recall the beauties and blessings
of their special dwelling place:
the warmth and comfort of
the living room where so many
intimate conversations and
satisfying parties took place;
the kitchen where nourishing
food was prepared and meals eaten;
the dining room where guests
enjoyed the fellowship and the
gifts of hospitality;
the bedroom where rest
and sex had their place;
the bathrooms where bodies
were taken care of in privacy;
and the doors which opened to
the wider world of mystery
and delight.

We need to remember that
it takes many hands to build
a house but only a few zealous
hearts to create a new home.

Send to the homeless people
of Minot, North Dakota,
the strength, courage, and patience
to make it through the long
and difficult journey
to outer rebuilding
and inner healing.

May they rely upon and accept
the help of others
to build a house
that they can eventually
make a new home.
