The Measure
by Peter Levitt

To take the measure
of stone give
your hand's full
flesh to it, feel
with your skin,
shape, heft,
and size,
find that part
of you where
it lies, that
field which discovers
you, you there
after all
most ancient
conglomerate
of space,
and that other
thing: what has grown
in the heart,
simply hard.
Do not make it
a crime. Make
nothing other
than it is —
the breath
in your mouth,
full reach
of the world.
