The Girl Who Lost Her Smile is written by Karim Alrawi and adapted from Rumi's Mathnawi, a spiritual classic consisting of stories and poetry. Jehan is a radiant and beautiful young woman who lives in Baghdad. Her remarkable smile brightens the sun during the day and makes the stars sparkle at night. But one day Jehan loses her smile. Her distressed father seeks the help of the hoopoe, a very wise bird.

Soon the greatest artists in the world begin to appear to try to coax out Jehan's smile with their paintings. But they cannot help her to find her smile. So the hoopoe bird goes on a quest to find the right man for the job. It turns out to be a young Persian man. He begins to scrape, smooth, and polish the walls and asks Jehan to help him. Soon the walls begin to glow, revealing the beauty that had always been there waiting to be uncovered. Jehan's smile returns and the room becomes even brighter.

This wonderful Sufi tale encourages children 4 years old and up to see that we live in a sacred world infused with beauty, and all we have to do is release the brightness that is already within and all around us.
