Rachel Naomi Remen is a clinical professor at the University of California - San Francisco School of Medicine and the author of Kitchen Table Wisdom and My Grandfather's Blessings. For 47 years she has struggled with her own chronic illness while teaching others how to cope with cancer. All the while, Remen also has tried to convince physicians and other health care providers that mystery is more important than mastery.

On this two-hour cassette, this teacher shares her profound understandings of this spiritual practice. Life is larger than science, and it does not yield to those who want to control it. We could all learn from indigenous people who seem to be more relaxed with the mysteries of creation. For them, even the smallest things are worthy of wonder. Remen tutors us in the art of seeing mystery when it happens right in front of us. Artists have done this for centuries.

The mystery inside us is as deep and profound as the riddles of everyday life. Remen shares accounts of individuals with terminal diseases who have lived. The will to live and the ability to tap into the divine power within makes for many miraculous healings.

On the second half of the tape, Remen presents exercises designed to help us become more receptive to the mysteries of life. One of them is to ask ourselves at the end of the day: What surprised me? What touched or moved me? What inspired me today? The more we monitor our experiences, the more we gain a respect for the inexplicable happenings that touch our hearts. Remen is a master teacher on the spiritual practice of mystery.
