In this book, Annice Callahan, professor of spiritual theology at Regis College in Toronto, focuses on the lives and writings of six individuals who deserve the attention of Christians. They are Evelyn Underhill, Anglican mystic; Dorothy Day, peacemaker in our nuclear age; Karl Rahner, theologian of everyday Christian life; Simone Weil, witness to solidarity in affliction; Thomas Merton, a living mystery in solitude; and Henri Nouwen, prophet in conversion.

Callahan lifts up the ability of these spiritual teachers to help us appreciate the significance of gratitude, trust, compassion, and the mediation of God's forgiving nearness. They tutor us in the spiritual values which can infuse our understanding of war and peace, suffering, ecumenicism, conversion, and ethics.
