Mark Mossa teaches American Catholicism at Fordham University and frequently writes on Ignatian spirituality, contemporary Christianity, and ministry with youth and young adults. He has selected and written the annotations to this paperback in the Skylight Illuminations series.

Saint Ignatius Loyola (1491 - 1556) was a soldier who became the mystic founder of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. They are known for their penchant for everyday spirituality — "finding God in all things." They also pioneered a blend of contemplation and concrete action in the world along with an emphasis on education and teaching.

In his introduction titled "A Practical Mysticism," Mossa sums up the diverse and admirable achievements and legacies of Saint Ignatius of Loyola including his retreat manual The Spiritual Exercises and his writings on human nature, the purpose of life, calling, contemplation, and the art of discernment.

This paperback is divided into thematic sections on the Spiritual Exercises, Ignatian Prayer, choices and life decisions, the interior life, living with and for others, imitating Jesus, and union of mind and heart.
