Hoot Owl is a hungry creature of the night. He sees himself as a fierce beast on the lookout for prey. Hoot Owl is a trickster who uses disguises (as a carrot to catch a rabbit, as a mother sheep to catch a lamb, as an ornamental birdbath to catch a pigeon) but none of them work. He continues his search for food with bravado: "The terrible silence of the night spreads everywhere. But I cut through it like a knife." Hoot Owl may not possess many skills as a hunter but he does have the determination to accomplish his task even in the face of a series of failures.

Sean Taylor has written more than 40 books for young readers across the genres and with Hoot Owl he has created a lovable creature who if he were a dog, we'd say of him that his bark is worse that his bite. Although this predator wants to come across as fierce, he really is very funny. The impressive illustrations by Jean Jullien greatly enhance the playfulness of the story. This excellent children's picture book is designed for children from ages 3 to 7.
