In Valkyries: An Encounter with Angels Paulo Coelho, having just finished writing The Alchemist, laments, "One way or another, I have wound up destroying what I've loved." In order to rectify the situation, he heads off for the Mojave Desert with his wife Chris. Coelho wants to speak with his guardian angel.

During their 40-day sojourn in the wilderness, they encounter a young practitioner of magic and the Valkyries, a band of eight motorcycle women who speak with God. Their leader, Valhalla, tells Coelho that he must "break a pact, accept forgiveness and make a bet" if he wants to speak to his guardian angel. This modern day morality play offers provocative slants on paradise, God, angels, forgiveness, marital love, and following one's dreams.
