The principles and practices of Yoga are not just for Hindus. They have enriched the spiritual lives of Christians, Jews, Muslims, and others, including none-of-the-aboves, for centuries.

This practical course draws from core texts such as the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita, as well as the work of leading gurus and yoga masters and the lived experience of practitioners. We will correct common misunderstandings and see how yogic precepts and methods can help everyone, regardless of path or tradition, live a deep, authentic spirituality in the modern world. The emphasis is on transformation, not dogma; on individuality, not one-size-fits-all solutions.

We will learn practices from the four yoga pathways: bhakti (devotion), karma (selfless service), jnana (mental), raja (psychophysical discipline). We’ll explore the Eight Limbs (ashtanga) of Classical Yoga, including the yamas and niyamas (ethical guidelines), asana (posture), pranayama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), and samadhi (transcendence) — all of which enhance our ability to sustain the true goal of yoga, Divine Union. As challenges arise in integrating yogic teachings into our lives, we’ll also look at issues around desire and attachment, work and money, love and sex, spiritual authorities and institutions, and more. A video on hatha yoga poses and on breathwork will be included in the course, as well as two audio meditations.

You will receive:

  • 12 emails — scheduled at a pace that you choose — each containing Phil's reflections and practice suggestions that match that session's theme;
  • Two videos on yoga poses and breath practices, collaboratively produced by Phil and hatha yoga teacher Tulsi Bagnoli;
  • Two audio recordings on meditation.
