Eknath Easwaran (1911-1999) was a pioneer of interspirituality who blended Eastern and Western perspectives to illuminate the path of love and service. Honoring his Hindu grandmother as his primary spiritual teacher, he wrote about the importance of living a spiritual life in the midst of family and community.

Easwaran grew up in "Gandhi's India" and as a young man sat in prayer meetings with the Mahatma. After a career as a professor of English Literature, writer, and speaker in India, he came to the United States on a Fulbright exchange program in 1959. Two years later, he established the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in California. This wonderful organization continues his work today through publications and retreats.

We have reviewed many of Eknath Easwaran's 40 published works and have found him to be a wise and compassionate spiritual teacher. Among his diverse writings are instructions in spiritual practices, translations of sacred texts, spiritual biographies, commentaries on Christian literature, and his monumental The Bhagavad Gita for Daily Living. His prose is both inspirational and down-to-earth. His core practice is passage meditation, in which we use a memorized spiritual text to build our capacity to embody our highest ideals.

We invite you to experience the practical wisdom of this spiritual teacher by "Practicing Spirituality with Eknath Easwaran." This 40-part e-course consists of emails each containing a brief passage from one of Easwaran's books and a suggestion on how to practice its message. The e-course will present many of his central themes: calming the mind, patience, transforming negative energy, mystical moments, the unity of life, karma, how to weather storms, and the way of love. We'll also work with his attention, mantram, and passage meditation practices.
