"Catholics live in an enchanted world, a world of statues and holy water, saints and religious medals, rosary beads and holy pictures," Catholic columnist Andrew Greeley has written. This tradition encourages a wide range of devotional and contemplative practices. It has supported an extensive system of monastic communities for men and women and also actively promoted everyday spirituality for laypeople. Many Catholics have been leaders in the peace and social justice movements of our time. They tell us that the sacred can be discovered in our homes, at our workplaces, in nature and in urban settings — anywhere we seek God and serve others.

This e-course will dip into the immense reservoir of writing by contemporary Catholics who challenge us to encounter the Divine in devotion, grace, imagination, justice, peace, reverence, silence, and wonder. You will receive 40 emails, each with a thought-provoking quotation from a Catholic writer followed by a related practice to use during the day. This is not a course on the history of the Catholic Church or a summary of what Catholics believe. Rather, our emphasis will be on the everyday practices of this tradition that will enhance your experience of the sacred whether you are on this path or another.

Some of the spiritual teachers included are already recognized in the Living Spiritual Teachers Project of this website: Joan Chittister, John Dear, Edward Hays, Megan McKenna, Richard Rohr, Joyce Rupp, David Steindl-Rast, Thomas Keating, and Macrina Wiederkehr, and others. By the end of the e-course, you'll have read selections from 40 different Catholic teachers.
