Everyday Spirituality

Spirituality is not something you "get" once and for all. It is an ongoing experience of the sacred in daily life - that's why it's often referred to as the spiritual journey. You may feel more connected at certain times than at others, and that is normal. But what helps you live a spiritual life every day is to stay on the path of practice.

Everyday spirituality requires a certain kind of attention and a desire to walk your talk. To help you with these goals, Spirituality & Practice offers a variety of resources on all aspects of the spiritual path.

The Art of Being: 101 Ways to Practice Purpose in Your Life is one such resource. Dennis Merritt Jones (minister, teacher, personal coach) shares the wisdom of the New Thought movement and insights about finding the presence of God in even the tiniest parts of our daily lives. In the Reviews Database at Spirituality & Practice there are reviews of hundreds of other books about everyday spirituality, spiritual formation, spiritual direction, women's spirituality, and the spiritual journey in general.

If patience is a challenge for you, the article Practicing Patience by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat and the 21-day spiritual course Patience Builders don't promise immediate results, but do suggest specific ways to practice patience in everyday life. The Brussats, founders of Spirituality & Practice, believe patience to be a truly counterculture stance, but understand and communicate the importance of it in your relationships with yourself, others, and God.

Spirituality and Aging

Many of us fear growing older, but there is a more spiritual stance available to us. We can aspire to "conscious aging." The relationship between spirituality and aging is a subject covered frequently in the books and films reviewed by Spirituality & Practice, and conscious aging is a content area of the website.

For example, Aging Well: Surprising Guideposts to a Happier Life by George E. Vaillant, M.D. (director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development), reviewed and excerpted on the website, details some of the keys to successful aging. Spiritual teacher Ram Dass explores aging, changing, and dying in Still Here. Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and Ronald S. Miller delineate the spiritual dimensions of the last stages of life in From Age-ing to Sage-ing.

Additional Resources

In addition to identifying good books on spirituality and aging, Spirituality & Practice offers E-Courses that have proven popular with elders. They enable people to enhance their spiritual connection through emails and an online forum. The Spiritual Literacy DVD series has been successfully used in retirement communities, and a model with examples of what happened when a group of seniors met regularly around the series is available from the website.
