A Teaching Scene from Smoke directed by Wayne Wang

In this urban drama, Auggie has a life project. Every day at 8 A.M. he takes a photograph of the corner where his cigar store is located — his special place on earth. This is a disciplined spiritual practice that takes patience and attention.

When his friend Paul, a novelist, looks at the albums containing over 4,000 of these photographs, he complains that they are all the same. Auggie tells him, "You'll never get it if you don't slow down." And sure enough, Paul realizes that the pictures are remarkably different and that among them is something important for him to see. The blessings are right in front of our eyes, and the best spiritual journeys are often the ones we take on our own block.
