TV Guide called St. Elsewhere "the greatest dramatic series of all time." This MTM Enterprises series aired for six seasons from 1982 - 1988, and garnered 13 Emmy awards and the coveted Peabody and Humanitas awards. The story lines revolve around a large staff of a rundown inner-city hospital. Among the most fascinating characters are Dr. Jack Morrison (David Morse), a sensitive and loving physician totally dedicated to his work and his idealism, and Dr. Mark Craig (William Daniels), a coronary surgeon who's both arrogant and competent. The elder statesmen of St. Elsewhere, Dr. Daniel Auschlander (Norman Lloyd) and Dr. Donald Westphall (Ed Flanders), are mentors worth emulating. A talented woman physician, Dr. Annie Cavanero (Cynthia Sikes), and a black doctor, Dr. Phillip Chandler (Denzel Washington), work extra hard to prove themselves.

The Very Best of St. Elsewhere consists of four cassettes presenting a crosscut of shows from each season of the TV series. These episodes reveal the phenomenal pressures on these doctors and their patients in a less than perfect institutional setting. Together they experience the confusions, heroics, crises, and moments of grace that are part and parcel of hospital work.
