At the end of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace), a computer genius, has left Sweden for the Caribbean with a large sum of money. In this screen adaptation of the second novel from the bestselling Millennium trilogy written by the late Stieg Larsson, she gets a letter informing her of the death of her mother. Lisbeth returns to Sweden and discovers that Nils Bjurman (Peter Andersson), the lawyer appointed to oversee her return to society, has been negligent in his reports. She confronts him but leaves behind her fingerprints.

Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), the publisher and journalist for the Millennium, is worried about what has happened to Lisbeth, his friend and ally. But his immediate attention is focused on a young reporter who is doing research for an expose of human trafficking in Sweden and the involvement of some important business and government figures. When he and his girlfriend are murdered, Mikael again finds himself involved. His immersion in the case becomes even more intense when Bjurman is killed and Lisbeth's fingerprints are found on the gun. The police believe that she has committed all three murders.

Daniel Alfredson directs this thriller and fills in many details about Lisbeth's horrific past with her family and her nightmarish experiences in a mental institution. The drama brings Mikael and Lisbeth together again as they team up to uncover the corruption and power plays of unethical men who view women as the weaker sex. Lisbeth again proves them wrong.
