There is very little sizzle or emotional vitality in this World War II spy story. Brad Pitt stars as Max, a Canadian Special Operations Executive who is paired with Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard), a seasoned member of the French resistance network on a dangerous mission in Morocco. Posing as a married couple, they are to assassinate the German ambassador at a special party in his honor. Working out all the details, Max and Marianne spend time with each other and fall in love.

Director Robert Zemeckis and screenplay writer Steven Knight concoct a ridiculous setting for this couple's first sexual encounter: they make love in a car rocked by high winds and pelting sand in the Saharan dunes. Then, after completing their mission, Max asks her to accompany him to London as his wife. He continues to work for Colonel Frank Heslop (Jared Harris) until some news rocks him to his core.

Brad Pitt gives a stiff and unemotional performance in Allied and there is little screen chemistry between him and Cotillard. She manages to cook up some magical moments but not enough of them to save this romantic thriller from plunging into boredom.
