A Walk in the Clouds is an extravagantly romantic fable directed by Alfonso Arau (Like Water for Chocolate). Keanu Reeves plays Paul Sutton, a World War II veteran who, fleeing from the woman he hastily married before going overseas, meets Victoria (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon), a graduate student in distress.
Made pregnant by a professor who then abandoned her, she is frightened by what her authoritarian father (Giancarlo Giannini) might do to her once she returns home to the family vineyard in Napa Valley. Paul agrees to save her honor by posing for one night as her husband and then leaving her in the morning. However the family patriarch (Anthony Quinn) persuades him to stay for the harvesting of the grapes.
With lush imagery and interesting rituals, director Arau spins this tale of an honorable young man who fulfills his destiny by falling in love with the woman of his dreams and finding a place in a family that he never had while growing up as an orphan.
