The Adventures of Huck Finn stars Elijah Wood as the irrepressible youngster in Mark Twain's classic story, adapted for the screen by director Stephen Sommers. Courtney B. Vance is Jim, the runaway slave who joins Huck on the river raft and convinces him to go down the Mississippi to a point where he can find passage to the free states. Along the way, they get involved in all kinds of hazardous situations, including a nasty incident when Huck is shot. The film, however, while high on adventure, emphasizes another side of the story by focusing on Huck's conflict between his feelings for Jim as a friend and his duty to do "what's right" in a slave-owning society. Eventually, he learns that just because an idea like slavery is popular doesn't make it right. Despite the violence and jeopardy situations, this message and Wood's enthusiastic performance make the film worth your while.
