The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe is an appealing screen adaptation of Lily Tomlin's one-woman show which opened on Broadway in 1985. Jane Wagner's script is based on her award-winning play. The twelve characters represent some of the more egregious fads, foibles, and fantasies of late twentieth century American culture. They include a bag lady in touch with Martians, a 15-year-old punk performance artist and her grumpy grandparents, a high society matron, two prostitutes, and a male trend hopper. The show-stopper is an eye-opening look at the decline of feminism as explicated by three women sharing their opinions on love, sex, work, marriage, parenting, and divorce. Tomlin is a cultural treasure.
