L.627 is a leisurely-paced French film about a high-strung Parisian narcotics officer nicknamed Lulu (Didier Bezace) who is a 13-year veteran of fighting crime in the streets. Unlike American movie portraits of cops and drug dealers, the emphasis here is not upon adrenalin-pumping automobile chases or spectacular shootouts but the day-to-day drudgery of facing bureaucratic snafus, dealing with uncooperative informers, and keeping burnout at bay. The war against drugs has a personal note for Lulu, who has a soft spot in his heart for a strung-out prostitute who is HIV positive. Director Bertrand Tavernier respects Lulu's struggle to keep his soul alive even if it means moonlighting as a wedding filmmaker.
