This interesting Australian movie, based on a 1961 novel by Nene Gare, tells the story of an aboriginal family, the Comeaways, living in a shantytown outside a small city. Sixteen-year-old Trilby (Kristina Nehm) convinces her parents to rent a house in the city, but they have trouble adjusting to the customs of the whites. Trilby struggles to achieve a life of her own apart from her family while coping with the prejudice and patronizing attitudes of whites she encounters. Writer/director Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies) does a superb job tracking this young woman's rite of passage to adulthood and the wider world. The film is a sensitive cross-cultural study.
