In Man Facing Southeast, Dr. Denis (Lorenzo Quinteros), a member of the psychiatric staff at Buenos Aires mental institution takes a special interest in Rantes (Hugo Soto), a patient who claims to be an extraterrestrial. He is intrigued by the man’s charisma and by his only visitor, a mysterious woman (Ines Vernengo). Writer-director Eliseo Subiela has done a masterful job in this parabolic Argentinean film about a cybernetic Christ who helps those in need, wins the immediate adoration of children, and can even convince an audience at an outdoor concert of Beethoven’s Ninth symphony to get up and dance.
