This is the fourth film by French director Diane Kurys, and it works both as an enchanting anatomy of a love affair and as a mediation on one woman’s slow awakening to her identity. Peter Coyote plays an American movie star in Europe shooting a film about an Italian poet who committed suicide. Although married, he falls in love with Jane (Greta Scacchi), his leading lady. With a delicacy that accentuates small details and mood changes, Kurys conveys the otherworldliness of their torrid love affair and its impact on their work, family, and friends. A Man in Love captures the truth of novelist Laurie Colwin’s observation: "Love, even if it was doomed, gave you a renewed sense of things: it did hand life back to you."
