This is a gritty, down-home film set in Arkansas about two railroad workers who take decisive action when their company decides to close down the railroad operations and move into air freight. Wilford Brimley, in a role made for him in heaven, plays Haney, a crusty brakeman who convinces his friend Leo (Levon Helm) to borrow an engine and ride to Chicago in hopes of changing the company chairman's mind. The cast also includes Mary Steenburgen, Barbara Barrie, Bob Balaban, Kevin Bacon, and Holly Hunter. End of the Line, directed by Jay Russell, brims with respect for the fighting spirit of these displaced workers.
