Islamophobia Worse in American Now Than after 9/11Suzanne Goldenberg reports on a survey that found that more than half of Americans believe there are more violent extremists within Islam than in any other religion and that the faith encourages violence against non-Muslims. This Washington Post-ABC News poll also revealed that since January 2002 the proportion of those who believe mainstream Islam promotes violence against non-believers has risen from 14% to 32%. James Zogby, president of the Washington-based Arab American Institute, told the Post that he was not surprised by the poll's results because politicians, authors, and media commentators have demonized the Arab world since 2001. It's clear to us that Christian, Jewish, Hindu and other religious leaders need to step up now and speak out in support of their moderate Muslim brothers and sisters. Another way to combat the rising tide of prejudice is to read books that give honest and authentic insights into Islam to combat the derogatory impressions promoted by the media.
