”The real work of planet-saving will be small, humble, and humbling, and (insofar as it involves love) pleasing and rewarding,” writes poet and essayist Wendell Berry. “Its jobs will be too many to count, too many to report, too many to be publicly noticed or rewarded, too small to make anyone rich or famous.”

Just after a history-making election in the United States, it’s tempting to think that the longed-for change will come mainly through the intervention of governments and large organizations. But we all know that it’s the nongovernmental agencies, the nonprofit organizations, and the small activist groups, many working on the local level, that are the real change agents in our world.

Our sister site, Gratefulness.org, has found a beautiful way to illustrate this truth. Their “Light Up the World” feature locates those points of light around the world where such groups are working, taking stands for a sane and fair political, environmental, and economic future of our planet. When you launch the program, you are treated to a spinning globe sprinkled with lights. Click on one light, and you will see the names and contact information for groups working in that area. Visit often and be inspired by these examples of worldwide good works. If you still need reason to hope, here are hundreds of them.
