While national and global protections are certainly important, stewardship of the earth’s provisions may be best achieved at the local level. One such creative local effort is establishing and using repair cafés. Repair cafés are free meeting places that make volunteers and tools available for people to repair household items like clothing, appliances, bicycles, computers, and furniture. Visitors bring their broken items and work together with skilled specialists to repair them. Repair cafés help people use household items longer, reducing the volume of materials and energy to produce new products, the amount of CO2 emissions associated with manufacturing and recycling, and the amount of trash that goes in landfills.
