Set aside a time in the evening when you can speak freely without being overheard. After a few preparatory minutes of silence, talk out loud to God in a conversational way. You might begin with the question, "How was my day?" Answer by reviewing your experiences hour by hour, noting with gratitude the times when you sensed Spirit's presence, admitting those actions and thoughts that made you feel separated from God. Express your feelings; even talk about your problems.

Conversational prayer signals your interest in having a relationship with God. And it is usually not one way. The practices of attention and listening help you discover God's end of the conversation. Rabbi Cooper suggests you also use sacred texts, such as the Bible, sacred poetry, and collections of spiritual writing. After talking to God for a while, open the book at random and read a paragraph to find out how God is speaking to you in this moment.
