In Boundless Compassion, Joyce Rupp writes of her experience finding comfort in reminding herself of our commonalities:
When I remember our common humanity — that a form of my experience also happens to others — this reality comforts me. The first time I traveled alone overseas I eased my fear by thinking, A lot of people around the world are traveling alone today, just as I am. I will be okay. Sensing that oneness calmed my anxiety and gave me strength. Another time, when I was in the laborious process of moving after living in the same place for twenty years, I paused and said to myself, At this very moment, countless other people are also leaving places they have grown fond of and find painful to leave. Again, that thought eased my emotional state. The reluctance and grief lessened. My heavy heart felt lighter. I knew I could do what was required. (65)

To Practice: The next time you’re feeling down, alone, or afraid, try creating an affirmation like Rupp’s -- remind yourself that all humans experience feelings of inadequacy, that all humans make mistakes, that all humans face difficulties. Make your own statement (like those above) affirming the commonality of your human experience and that you will be okay.
