A sacrament is a practice that makes the sacred mystery accessible. Its broad meaning is thus consistent with a common way of speaking about the specifically Christian sacraments: they are "means of grace," ways of mediating the sacred. As we survey traditional religious practices, we will focus on their sacramental function as incubators of the heart and mediators of the sacred.
