Hospitality is essential to spiritual practice. It reminds you that you are part of a greater whole. Gemilut chesed is about putting others first. Putting others first puts you in the midst of life without the illusion of being the center of life. . . .

Gemilut chesed is a wonderful practice. By putting others first, you discover how much others do for you. By putting others first, you find that you are not a limited and isolated individual in competition with others. By putting others first, you discover that you can make the world just a little brighter for your having been in it. . . .

A friend of mine makes it a habit to drop a quarter in a parking meter that has expired to save the car's owner a ticket. Every once in a while the car's owner see him do it. "The look of shock at this simple act of kindness both saddens me and makes me glad. I'm glad I could help, but I am sad that such acts are so rare."
