Wrinkles and creases are not merely signs of aging flesh and drying skin; they display the lines of character. A stiffened neck indicates more than the erosion of cartilage and vertebrae; that neck might express a certain rigidity and headstrong stubbornness of character. The stiffness asks to be questioned: What does it have to do with unbending forwardness, with fixity of outlook; with an inability to nod assent or bow one's head; with turning away or against?
