Remembrance is a deepening process. It descends from the tongue to the heart, and from the heart to the soul. In Arabic, the term dhikr means both "repetition" and "remembrance." The remembrance of the tongue is the beginning and is often just mechanical repetition. As the meaning and power of the words begin to sink in, our hearts are filled with joy, longing for God and other spiritual feelings. This is the remembrance of the heart. Our longing for God is also a sign of God's presence within us.
