When brought to our knees by limit situations such as 9/11, we are offered a great opportunity to experience God by meeting God in the midst of the spiritual poverty God and we share, the poverty of the cross, the utter destitution that led the dying Jesus to cry out in despairing abandonment. Like beckons to like, affinity calls to affinity. The more Godlike we become — that is, the more destitute of the "me" and its distracting clamor for security — the better we are able to experience God. Once we step out of the safety zone into the margins, once we hazard risky love, the God of the margins self-reveals.
