Once you give a gift and it has left your hand, it belongs to the other person, and he or she does what they want with it, because it's theirs. One time I gave Suzuki-roshi a very old and beautiful Korean celadon vase. He thanked me for it that day, but afterward I never saw it again. "Gee, where is it?" I wondered. It turned out that he had given it to somebody else! Now it really makes me laugh. But that's giving: Once it leaves your hands, it's gone. The act is done, and you should be happy.
