Actually, we are happy when we are free of wanting to be happy. Wanting to be happy automatically makes us unhappily aware of lack. In Shantideva's words, "Whatever joy there is in the world, all comes from wanting others to be happy; and whatever suffering there is in this world, all comes from wanting oneself to be happy." So ,if we want to be happy, we can stop worrying about being happy and focus instead on wanting others to be happy. This urge leads us to try to care for others fully, knowing that they will be happy only when they stop yearning to be happy.
