The term "hearing the dharma" includes all forms of study. It includes reading books of the Buddha's teachings and, given the examples of modern technology, it also includes receiving instruction by watching video tapes, listening to audiotapes, and so forth. All of this is genuine activity of hearing the dharma. All of it is very important.
