Goodness, beyond being its own reward, has positive, practical consequences. Relentless goodness toward those who do evil eventually wears them down and overcomes them. Goodness disarms others and inspires them to do good deeds as well. But we have to take the first step. . . . Goodness also has spiritual consequences. Selflessness stands out, Jesus implies. It catches even God's attention. It will earn us true credit, where it counts, from God.
