Confucianism teaches that peace requires the cultivation and expansion of empathy, through which a person is able to imagine himself or herself inside the shoes of another, understanding that person's subjective aims and intentions, moods, and motivations. This empathy best begins in small ways, with siblings getting along with siblings, spouses with spouses, and friends with friends. Only as they become the peace they commend to the world does peace emerge.
