Quakers call the presence of the Holy Spirit working within us a "sifting silence." It separates the worthwhile from the worthless. Since we sometimes confuse those two — we may know what we value, but what we value may not be valuable. It can be a disturbing experience. Sometimes silence even shows us that the choice is not between what is wrong and what is right, but between what is right and what is right for us.
