The symbol of the host is similar to that of the shepherd. Hospitality is a central virtue throughout the Middle East and in the tradition of the children of Abraham to this day, whether Jews, Arab Christians, or Muslims. Hospitality among the nomads and semi-nomads of the desert, where shepherds also roam, was especially strong — and still is.
