Most of our lives are lived on an embarrassingly petty scale — grudges nursed, hurts carefully tended so that never heal. From the cross, Jesus rips our pettiness to shreds and shows us how enemies should be treated. His standard of forgiveness is radical, breathtaking, seemingly impossible. I'm not sure that I'm up to the challenge. But at least I can try.
