Solitude brings me back to a simplicity of spirit, an inner poverty that I need in order to clear the room inside. It allows me to empty myself out, so there is gracious space within where I can receive myself, then God, and eventually others. . . .

The Christian mystic Hildegard wrote, "God hugs you. You are encircled by the arms of the mystery of God." I have always loved those words, and I believe it is solitude, most of all, that brings us into this circle of presence. But be forewarned: Solitude is no dainty hug. God's is a fierce embrace.
