Jeffrey Sachs commented that if we "spent more time and money on mobilizing Weapons of Mass Salvation in addition to combating Weapons of Mass Destruction, we might actually get somewhere in making this planet a safer and more hospitable home." Poverty and gross inequality throughout the world waste human potential, weaken the entire community, and put the whole human family at risk. On the most basic level, development is a necessary condition for justice and peace, and the first step toward a safer world is to help those who are most in need.
