In each act of planting I affirm my intention to stand for trees, to be part of the healing rather than part of the destruction. Each slender seedling offers the opportunity to sort through priorities, to take a small step in a direction that seems to make sense. I try to imagine the possibility that generations of people and trees will come after me, enjoying this landscape as forest again. This tree planting is such a simple and naive thing we do, though we glimpse at some deep level how necessary it is.
