Trail markers definitely help. Without them I know I would have been lost on every trail I've ever hiked — even the ones where I could see my car in the distance. There is just something utterly confusing about the woods in this city dweller. I have always been grateful for these little signs that I was on the right path. They gave me the energy to keep going and erased the fear that I would be spending an unplanned night in the woods.

We all need such trail markers. In this modern life of sleep deprivation, caffeine overload, and chronic anxiety we need to know that we're still on the path to peace — and that we'll make it eventually.
