Jesus, too, gives ample evidence of a keen sense of wonder. As a young boy, he was so enchanted by the teachers in the temple at Jerusalem that he stayed behind to listen and converse with them. As an adult, Jesus marveled at life — all of life. He stood in wonder before the birds of the air, the lilies of the field, and the gathering of storm clouds. He was fascinated by bread rising, wheat ripening, and wine aging. Jesus marveled at people too. He marveled at the incredible compassion of a Roman centurion, the unbelievable faith of a Syro-Phoenician woman, and the thoughtful gratitude of a freshly cured leper. Jesus could face even the mystery of his own passion with unfaltering trust in God, believing completely that even the power of death is nothing compared to the wonder of God's love.
