"Revelation is an ongoing process; each of us is a potential harbinger of meaning," writes Forrest Church who, along with John A. Buehrens, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, is the author of this cogent introduction to this faith. Robert Fulghum's foreword conveys the open-mindedness and love of freedom that are hallmarks of this religious denomination.

A Chosen Faith is organized around the six sources of faith: (1) direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces that create and uphold life; (2) words and deeds of prophetic women and men; (3) wisdom from the world's religions; (4) Jewish and Christian teachings; (5) humanist teachings; and (6) spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions.

"Deeds not creeds" has been an emphasis in Unitarian Universalism since its inception. What kind of religious community is the ideal here? John Buehrens answers: "one in which individuals are never asked to check their minds at the church door, but in which they offer one another the possibility of rediscovering an authentic and personal spirituality."
