We went to friend's house a few weeks ago and she gave us a tour of her beautiful and well-maintained garden. But the big surprise of the day was watching the variety of birds in the area communicating with each other and then arriving in separate shifts for food at her feeders.

In this very appealing children's book by Katherine Crawford Robey, Kate hears birdsongs and listens carefully. A robin delivers news that there's going to be a party. Kate wants to go and so she rushes outside. Other birds seems to be giving her directions.

Who is the party for and why is she the honored guest? No need to think about that; the main point is the story's affirmation of the intimacy that can be achieved between animals and human beings. All it takes is what Kate has in spades: wonder and the ability to truly listen.
