We are all going to leave a legacy — the fruits of the life we have lived as gifts to our families, colleagues, and communities. One of the important tasks of elderhood is to find ways to be intentional about that legacy — to plant the seeds and admire the blossoms — so that our legacy represents and expresses our values, our commitments, and our spirituality. As Rebbe Zalman Schachter-Shalomi wrote in his classic book From Age-ing to Sage-ing:
"Awakened to elderhood, we pour the distillate of our lives into other vessels, an act that not only seeds the future, but crowns our lives with worth and nobility."
We invite you explore how you explore this important focus of elderhood through this e-retreat. It was developed by Sage-ing International, one of Spirituality & Practice's partners in the Conscious Aging Alliance.
"Living Your Legacy" is part of Spirituality & Practice’s Elder Spirituality Series, which also includes courses by Angeles Arrien, Joan Chittister, Christina Baldwin, and William Martin. The team for this e-course are Sage-ing International members Anne Boynton, a practicing artist who uses creative exercises as a contemplative tool; Pat Hoertdoerfer, a retired Unitarian Universalist minister and curriculum developer who focuses in her workshops on spirituality and creativity; and Joanne Turnbull, a writer, former psychotherapist, hospice volunteer, and director emerita of the National Patient Safety Foundation. They are all trained facilitators who have led a variety of workshops on legacy issues. They have developed original e-course content and also included material by Sage-ing International members Ron Pevny, Meg Newhouse, Judith Helburn, and Council of Honored Sages member Christina Baldwin.
This e-course consists of 12 emails, each with an essay on a theme, a personal story by one of the leaders, and some ways for you to put the lesson's ideas into practice. The emails explain useful legacy planning tools and cover such themes as
• how legacy work is a blessing,
• intentional legacies of spiritual and ethical matters,
• linking past and present to future,
• positive and negative legacies,
• grand-generational mentoring,
• legacies of service to family, community, and the earth,
• and more
Subscribers also have access to the recording of a one-hour teleconference with the leaders held when the e-course was first offered in September 2014.
